Compared to other rooms in a home, remodeling a kitchen or bathroom can be a challenge. These rooms involve plumbing, special layout circumstances, and more electrical than other rooms. As a result, many homeowners may feel ill-prepared to take on a remodel of one of these rooms on their own.

If you’re about to start a bathroom or kitchen remodel but don’t know how to where to start, we’ll help guide you through the process. Even if you won’t be involved in the actual process, this guide will at least give you a better idea of what goes into a kitchen or bath remodel.

Planning

The planning stage might feel boring and drawn out, but it’s truly one of the most important parts of a kitchen and bathroom remodel. Poor planning can otherwise lead to poor results or mistakes along the way.

Planning a remodel involves deciding what your end goal is and determining your budget for the project. This stage also involves designing the layout, making sure all necessary permits are in order, and creating a projected finish timeline.

Demolition

Demolition involves removing old materials from the space, which are damaged, outdated, no longer wanted or needed, or will be moved elsewhere. Examples of materials often removed during bathroom and kitchen demos include cabinets, light fixtures, doors, trim, and baseboards.

Plumbing & Electrical

Every kitchen and bathroom needs solid electrical and plumbing. These systems may be installed, moved, or even upgraded during a remodel. It’s highly recommended to have a professional help you out during this process due to the complexities and/or dangers involved in electrical and plumbing.

Flooring & Walls

If any structural changes will be made, work to the bones of the walls will be completed right after the demolition process. If not, then walls and flooring will generally be worked on after plumbing and electrical is completed. Sometimes they’re worked on after cabinet and counter installation (next step).

During the flooring and walls phase, you may expect wall painting, flooring installation or refinishing, or the installation of decorative wall finishes like shiplap.

Cabinets & Counters

During this stage of a kitchen or bathroom remodel, cabinets and counters will be installed. These may be existing, refurbished or refaced, or brand new. Ideally, cabinets should have ample storage space while countertops should be easy-to-clean and relatively waterproof.

Appliances & Fixtures

Once cabinets and counters have been installed, and the flooring and walls have been finished, the appliances and fixtures can be placed. This may include light fixtures, an oven, built-in microwave, sink and faucet, bathtub, and so on.

Final Touches

After the core construction has been completed, and appliances and fixtures are set in place, the final touches come next. Finishing touches may include the installation of backsplash, bathtub/shower tiles, vanity mirror, and various decorative elements. Caulking and sealing, along with paint touches, also often happens at this point.

Clearly, there’s a lot involved in kitchen and bathroom remodels. The good news is, you don’t have to do the work on your own. With Build BLVD here to help plan and carry out your project, you can rest assured your remodel will go according to plan.
